In 2020, a year that frontline providers needed innovation more than ever, we provided nearly $400,000 in grant funding to 37 provider-led projects, and the program continues to grow. Examples of recently funded projects include the following.
To improve patient care and emergency room throughput, Memorial Medical Center Modesto piloted a telehealth version of Rapid Medical Evaluation®, Vituity’s evidence-based physician-in-triage program. During the two-week pilot, patient walkouts decreased by 41%, from 1.93% to 1.14%. This was achieved despite a 16% increase in patient volume during the same time frame.
Care Without Boundaries (CWB), a street medicine program at Kaweah Delta Medical Center (California), used an Innovation Grant to purchase several virtual care tablets. This greatly expanded CWB’s outreach by allowing ED clinicians to provide telehealth coverage for student- and resident-driven street teams. These dedicated, compassionate clinician volunteers have literally saved lives by recognizing heart attack and stroke symptoms and rushing patients to the ED.
A patient satisfaction initiative at Via Christi Hospital St. Francis in Wichita, Kansas, gives ED patients care and attention that goes beyond urgent medical need. The ED team used a Vituity Innovation Grant to staff patient care advocates during the department’s busiest hours. These advocates, chosen for their empathy and compassion, have time to sit with patients, communicate what’s happening, and offer emotional support, allowing clinicians to focus on patient care.

A lot of innovation comes up because there was some type of frustration at the beginning. We say, how can we do this better? And we were supported in this effort by Vituity, Dignity Health, and also the hospital in general. They said, "Yes, you need to move forward, because this is a process that we all are faced with. What can you do to help make it better?"
